A Journey
From Wycombe FC to Wasps RFC for Society Member Terry Evans
Terry played for and captained both Wycombe
Wanderers and Brentford during his career as a footballer. He initially
arrived at Wycombe on a six week loan, little guessing that he would return
many years later as a Sports Therapist. He is now currently working in
rugby, for the London Wasps, as their Senior Strength and Conditioning Coach
and Rehabilitation Specialist.I became involved in sports therapy for
various reasons. I had many injuries as a player, which really interested
me and I enjoyed researching each one to find out as much as I could. My
enjoyment of fitness meant that I had a good insight into anatomy which
helped me further down the line in my studies. Dave Jones, the Sports
Therapist at Wycombe, pretty much kept me going during the last 3 years of
my playing career as my right knee was worn out due to 2 Anterior Cruciate
Ligament reconstructions, 1 Medial Cruciate Ligament repair and a Chondral
defect. During this time we built up a great friendship that is as strong
as ever to this day.

the London Marathon 2009
“I just wanted to say a big THANK YOU for all your help yesterday. You
were all stars and helped to give our runners a professional and much needed
massage! I know how much the runners appreciated the care and attention
they received from you and so do we.” Natalie Tarrant,

University of
Gloucestershire at Tough Guy Event, Wolverhampton
On a cold, wintery February day, the University of Gloucestershire’s Course
Leader of the Sports Therapy Degree, Kate Cady, accompanied the first year
Sports Therapy students to The Tough Guy Event at Wolverhampton. This is a
biannual challenge which involves 8 miles of cross country followed by an
assault course. The students provided sports massage and first aid to the
very cold and very appreciative competitors, who travelled from all over the
world to take part in this now legendary experience.

The Chairman
writes:
As we move through the early part of 2009 and with the current world
climate, thoughts must move towards positive things happening to counter
worries and concerns that seem to be increasing everywhere. People often
turn to sport and exercise as a form of release from the stresses and
strains of daily living. Similarly, many people look for alternative and
new careers at times like this either through choice or necessity. With
both thoughts in mind, The Society of Sports Therapists is aware that an
increase in sporting activity is often associated with a rise in injuries.
It is, therefore, important that anyone who suffers from an injury or
problem seeks assessment, advice and treatment from appropriately trained
and qualified practitioners. Such practitioners must not only understand
what is required but also be members of a professional organisation that
ensures that its members work under clearly defined standards of proficiency
and codes of conduct. Members of The Society of Sports Therapists fulfill
these criteria and, as such, are in a position to help should injuries
occur.
