Women footballers more likely to ‘tear it like Gazza’ than ‘bend it like Beckham’

It has happened to Gazza, to Darren Gough, to Alan Shearer and to many other sports players. All three have suffered the serious and career threatening knee injury, the anterior cruciate ligament tear, sidelining them from the game for several months. Now a recent medical study presented by Professor Graham Smith, Chairman of the Society of Sports Therapist at the 14th International Congress of the World Confederation for Physical Therapy in Barcelona has revealed that the injury is a growing problem in female footballers and girls are nearly three times more likely to suffer the condition than their male counterparts.1 For all of those budding female Beckham’s out there, it’s a worrying situation.






 
Medical Study Reveals Sepp Blatter and ‘tired’ players may have a point

A clinical paper recently delivered by Professor Graham Smith, Chairman of The Society of Sports Therapists at The 14TH International Congress of The World Confederation for Physical Therapy held in Barcelona, will undoubtedly cause concern for Arsene Wenger, Sir Alex Ferguson and many other league managers throughout the UK. Professor Smith has identified the sports hernia to be a growing problem in professional football and for the first time, data received directly from physiotherapists and sports therapists looking after the players, has cited lack of rest as one possible contributory factor.

Research work undertaken by Thurrock and Basildon Lecturer, Rosemary Stevenson has shown that females have a high chance of suffering the very serious anterior cruciate ligament injury when playing football. Rosemary discovered that the injury, first made famous by Paul Gascoigne and more recently suffered by Mel C while participating in the Channel 4 programme ‘The Games’ is nearly three times more likely to happen to women than to their male counterparts





 
World Cup Rugby Stars Pay Tribute to Society Member David Jones

The testimonial year of Wycombe Wanderers Sports Therapist David Jones just gets better and better. England World Cup heroes, Lawrence D’allaglio and Jason Leonard, joined the former University of North London (now London Metropolitan University) Sports Therapy graduate at a special tribute dinner in his honour at Wycombe Wanderers FC earlier this week. The event was hosted by former England international Martin Bayfield and, Samoan and Wasps rugby star Trevor Leota and new Wycombe boss Tony Adams completed the star-studded line up.
