First All Round for Leeds Beckett Graduate Danielle Turnbull

Danielle Turnbull is the 2018 winner of the Society of Sports Therapists Travelling Scholarship to the University of Windsor, Canada and she is the first graduate from Leeds Beckett University to win the prestigious national award. It has been a whirlwind few weeks for Danielle, who just recently graduated with a First Class Honours degree in Sports and Exercise Therapy.  The 22 year old fought off stiff competition from graduates from Society accredited universities from around the UK to make it to the final and then came out on top following a tough interview process.

On hearing her name announced as the winner, Danielle said: ‘I couldn’t believe it, I was in complete shock. I thought it was a mistake.’

Danielle will be based at the University of Windsor, Green Shield Sports Therapy Clinic, under the watchful guidance of Athletic Therapist Dave Stoute and his therapy team. Former University Athletic Therapist Kathie Harvie, who flew over to the UK for the interviews, will host Danielle during the first part of her stay. Danielle  is the 10th winner of the award and she will be the 10th guest for the Harvie household. Danielle will be arriving at the start of pre-season training for the University football team, the Windsor Lancers, so it will be an ideal opportunity to experience life in a very busy clinic. Danielle will also get to visit Loaring Physiotherapy, a leading centre specialising in the treatment of elite and Olympic athletes and St Clair College which also boasts a top class varsity clinic.

Another sport that Danielle is excited to experience is Ice Hockey. The young graduate last year represented Great Britain Women’s University Ice hockey team at the 28th Winter Universiade in Kazakhstan. She said:

‘Ice hockey is a real passion of mine and I am so looking forward to experiencing ice hockey Canadian style. I might even pick up a few tips from the players.’

Professor Graham N. Smith, Chairman of The Society of Sports Therapists and a key member of the interview panel, said:

‘This Society of Sports Therapists Travelling Scholarship Award is only open to First Class Honours Graduates from Society accredited Universities throughout the UK, therefore the standard is naturally very high. This year was no exception. Danielle was the outstanding candidate and I have no doubt she will be a credit to both Leeds Beckett University and to the Society.
‘This year is the 10th anniversary of this Travelling Scholarship and we are immensely grateful to so many people for their dedication and support. In particular I must thank Kathy Harvie and Dave Stoute for their huge contribution and the University of Windsor for agreeing to allow us to set up this partnership 10 years ago’.
