The Board of Directors

  • Professor Graham N. Smith GradDipPhys FCSP MSST DipTP CertED

Professor Graham N. Smith is Chairman of The Society of Sports Therapists and both Founder Member and major driving force behind the Society, since its inception in 1990.

Graham has nurtured the Society through many stages of development, from the original concept and development, to setting up the first BSc(Hons) Degree programme in Sports Therapy in 1996 with the University of North London (now London Metropolitan University), to now overseeing and running a membership organisation that has collaborative agreements with nineteen universities and which accredits 24 Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes.

Graham has an extensive background in the treatment, management and rehabilitation of injuries at all levels of the sporting spectrum.  He is a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, a Visiting Professor at University of Chichester and an external Lecturer for the MSc in Sports Medicine at Trinity College, Dublin.

He was responsible for setting up and running the Football Association National Rehabilitation Centre at Lilleshall and he has also worked with British Olympic and representative teams, as well as in professional football.

During the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games, Graham was invited by the IOC Medical Committee to present a workshop as part of the Medical Education Programme.

Now, alongside working in his clinic in Glasgow and consultancy commitments, he lectures extensively nationally and internationally on the rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries and sports injury management.

  • Keith Waldon MSc Cert. Ed MSST MCSP

Keith is Vice Chairman of The Society of Sports Therapists and a Founder Member of the organisation. He has been a Member of the Board of Directors  (and formerly the Council of the Society), helping to oversee the development of the Society, since its inception in 1990.

Keith played a vital role in setting up the Society’s first collaborative links with a University in the UK, back in 1996. The University of North London (now known as London Metropolitan University) became the first University to run the BSc(Hons) programme in collaboration with the Society.  Since then, Keith has been instrumental in developing links with the Society’s family of universities and colleges which now number eighteen in the UK and one overseas.

Now leading on a variety of initiatives including international development, Keith continues to help drive the Society forward with skill and enthusiasm.

Keith has lectured on the BSc (Hons) Sports Science courses at the University of North London as well as on Treatment of Injury at the University of Portmouth.

He is very experienced in many aspects of the sporting spectrum and has a unique insight into the needs of an athlete and the role of the Sports Therapist.  Keith has over forty years experience in professional sport as a player, coach, teacher, sports therapist and physiotherapist. He was a former Coach to Tottenham Hotspur FC and Assistant Manager to Portsmouth FC. He now owns a very successful sports injury clinic in Portsmouth.

  • Kate Cady  MSc (Nottingham) MSc (Edge Hill) BSc (Hons) DipST PGCHE MSST

Kate joined the The Society of Sports Therapists’ Board of Directors in September 2012 and has taken on the role of Director with responsibility for communication.  She is a Senior Lecturer in Sports Therapy at the University of Gloucestershire, lecturing on the Masters programme.

Kate holds a BSc(Hons) in Sports Science and Sports Therapy which she completed at University of North London (now London Metropolitan University). This university led the way in developing the BSc(Hons) Sports Therapy in collaboration with The Society of Sports Therapists and Kate was a member of the very first cohort to complete the Degree programme there.

Kate now also has a Masters Degree in  Sports and Exercise Medicine from  the University of Nottingham and a Masters in Football Rehabilitation which she completed in 2012 at Edge Hill University.

A self confessed workaholic, Kate holds a number of other positions including Head of Medical Services for Swindon Town FC Academy, Head of Physiotherapy and Sports Therapy for the English Ice Hockey Association, and she also finds time to run Back2Fitness Sports Therapy, where she is Clinical Director.

  • Jenny Jones MSc BSc (Hons) PGCert MSST

Jenny  is The Society of Sports Therapists’ Director with responsibility for The University and College Liaison Group.

Jenny, who joined the Board in 2012, graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Sports Therapy from the University of Chichester in 2004. She then completed a Masters in Sport and Exercise Medicine with distinction, at the University of Nottingham in 2010.

From 2005-2011 Jenny attended 5 European Championships with the Under 18 England Basketball as their Sports Therapist. Jenny  has considerable experience working in football and athletics and has also spent time working with and learning from, Athletic Therapists in the USA.

In 2011, she presented her research on the 'Management of an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) rupture in a skeletally immature high performance athlete’ at The Pan Pacific Conference of Sport and Exercise Medicine. In 2012 Jenny took a sabbatical and worked in Australia as Programme Director of Sports Therapy and Lecturer at the Australian College of Sports Therapy, Melbourne.

Jenny is currently Principal Lecturer in Sports Therapy at the University of Hertfordshire.

  • John McCreadie MSc PGCHE DipSt MSST MCSP

John is The Society of Sports Therapists Director with responsibility for Membership and CPD and he has held  this position for  the last eleven years.  He sat on the Society’s  original Council for a number of years before joining the Society Board as one of its first Directors in 2002.

John has extensive experience both in the practical and theoretical application of Sports Therapy, providing him with the perfect tools to carry out this role. He is passionate about the Society and driving standards upwards, both within the Membership of the Society and in Sports Therapy as a profession.

John gained an MSc in Sport and Exercise Science at Teesside University and he is also a HCPC registered physiotherapist.

Prior to holding  Senior Lecturer posts at Teesside University and Edge Hill University, John worked in Scottish professional football for a number of years. However, after seven years in academia, John has returned to football and he is currently Head of Physiotherapy and Sports Therapy at a Scottish Premiership football club.
