The Society of Sports Therapists Bruce Hobbs Annual Travelling Scholarship each year offers one current member the opportunity to travel anywhere in the world to further their own knowledge, experience and expertise within the fields of Sports Therapy and Sports Medicine. The aim is also for that member to pass on the knowledge and expertise gained during the trip to his/her peers and colleagues within The Society of Sports Therapists.
The award is named after Bruce Hobbs who was a Society Member and a former Lecturer in Sports Therapy at the University of Hertfordshire, who sadly passed away in March 2010 with Motor Neurone Disease. Bruce was a proactive Member of the Society and an inspiration to many of his friends and colleagues. Bruce was a keen and active sportsman and he had played football semi-professionally and worked as a Therapist in professional football with Luton Town FC. It is hoped through naming the Scholarship after Bruce that his legacy will live on.
The Society believes that everyone should take whatever opportunities are presented to them to travel, explore and be exposed to different cultures and philosophies.
The standard of entries over the last few years has been very high and previous winners have had some invaluable experiences. Examples include one member working with the Spanish Ski team, another visiting Ghana and experiencing life with a Premier football team.
The winner receives a financial stipend towards their chosen trip. Applications for the Scholarship are open to current Members of The Society of Sports Therapists. Members are usually asked to write a short piece, about where they would like to go and why. Each entry is read by all of the Board, and the one judged to be the best application is classified as the winner.
After returning from their trip, the winner is asked to give a presentation at The Society of Sports Therapists’ Annual General Meeting and Seminar Evening.
